Publisher Freezes when Opened

Chris

I have encountered a user who says that every time she
runs Publisher 2002 while other programs are running, her
machine instantly freezes, requiring a reboot. She also
says that while running Publisher by itself, the program
will run briefly and then her machine will also freeze.
Microsoft Knowledge base article #322119 lists damaged or
outdated printer drivers as a possibl cause of this
problem. The article mentions 2 specific printers known
to cause this problem, the HP OfficeJet T45 all-in-one
printer and the Canon BJC250 printer, but the user is
connected to an HP2000 printer and an IBM InfoPrint 20
printer. Does anyone know if these printers are known to
cause Publisher to hang on start-up or freeze while
runnning? Any other possible causes for these symptoms?

Thanks,
Chris

Chris this is more than likely a video driver issue.

What version of Windows is this on?

Overall, Pub 2002 causing problems is miniscule and usually always the
problem of a video driver number 1 issue, and printer drivers number 2, or
garbage junk/rubbish/garbage/trash like Symantec and Norton products.

This user is running Windows XP Small Business edition,
and I believe that the system has an intergrated video
card on the motherboard. Here are the specs from Dell's
website-

Data bus width 64 bits
Address bus width 32 bits
Direct memory access (DMA) channels 7
Interrupts 15
System BIOS Desktop Management Interface (DMI) 2.0s- and
system management BIOS 2.3-compliant BIOS in 4-megabit
(Mb) flash chip
System clock 66, 100, or 133 MHz (matches processor bus
speed)
Network interface controller 3Com® 3C920

Graphics (Optional) and Video
Graphics architecture Intel 3D with direct accelerated
graphics port (AGP)
Graphics accelerator Embedded Intel Dynamic Video Memory
Technology (DVMT) with optional 4-MB Graphics Performance
Accelerator (GPA), or a 4X AGP card can be supported (low
profile cards for small form-factor and small desktop
systems; full-height cards [up to 22.9 cm or 9 inches]
for the small mini-tower system)
Display cache optional 4-MB, 133-MHz SDRAM
Graphics memory Dynamically allocated from system memory

I suppose I should have the user replace her current
video drivers with the most current ones off of the
windows update site?

The user is running windows XP Small Business Edition.

I believe the video card is intergrated into the
motherboard, it is the i815 chipset. I am assuming I
should get some other drivers from the windows update
site?

Well the i815 has certainly not been without its major problems.

You will more than likely find these at the Intel website.
You will likely find them included in a complete package with motherboard
chipset drivers.

On-board video chipsets and shared video memory is just asking for problems.
All the boxes like Dell, HP and IBM chuck together for the cheapest price
and maximum profit have these on-board integrated video chip sets and shared
memory etc.

People just do not realise how important the video card is and what it does
to the overall speed and performance of the computer.
