Publisher98 won't open Publisher95 file.

Hi,
A friend of mine wanted me to review at his first
publication before he prepared it for printing.

The problem is that when he sent me the file it I was
unable to open it. I looked in the file properties to
discover that he uses Publisher 95 version 5.0.
I use Publisher98.

Is there a way to fix this?
I searched Microsoft's website for a converter or upgrade
that would allow this, but I've had no luck so far.

Thanks.
Ruthie :)

Is the file you are tying to open on your hard disk or a
floppy?

It's on my hard drive.
It was originally an email attachment which I saved unto
my desktop.

Publisher can be picky about that. It may open a file that's on your hard
disk and not a floppy. Ditto for a network drive.

Okay, great.
That doesn't help me solve my current problem though.

If I can't find a way to get 98 to open a 95 file, then my
friend will have to redo the entire thing, since the
person who does the physical publishing uses 98.

Eh, sorry, I'm not used to having to type in my name
everytime I post something.

So, this info is great and all, but I still need to be
able to open this .pub file (created with the 95 version)
with the 98 version. Otherwise my friend will have to redo
the entire thing over after purchasing 98. =/

There's got to be some conversions for this somewhere.

ps, I basically said the same thing only anonymously
(didn't mean to), and I wanted to be sure you all knew it
was really me responding. :)

I do believe your friend has a newer version than 98, If you look at your Publisher
98 program file, it will say Microsoft® Publisher for Windows® 95 Version 5.0,
Have your friend save the document as Publisher 98.

You can send the file to me and I will convert it to a 98 publication. Remove "my" to
reply.

I use Publisher98.

Windows is telling you this because the file is a .Pub file. .Pub files on
your machine are set to open with Publisher 98, which Windows knows as
Publisher 95 version 5.0 (the original Publisher 95 was Publisher for
Windows 95 version 3.0)

To test this theory:
- Start up Notepad
- File > Save as
- Under Files of Type, select All Files (*.*)
- Type "Filename.pub", click OK, close Notepad
- Right-click the new file, click Properties

So the file that you have could have been created in *any* version of
Publisher. Publisher 98 cannot open files from Publisher 1.0, 2000, 2002,
or 2003. The likelihood is that the files were created with Publisher 2000,
2002, or 2003. These versions allow you to "save down" to older versions
through File > Save As... Ask the person who created the file to Save As a
Publisher 98 file.

Oh!
Yes, I see what you mean.
How can he save the document as Publisher 98?

You are awesome!

I'd rather have him learn how to do it because I can't be
calling on you all the time. ;)

Strangely though, when I look in the properties of the
file he sent me, it says the same thing as it does in my
98 properties. So, one would think it would
work. . .Hmm . . .

Publisher files will always reflect the newer version Publisher you have installed.
You friend needs to use "save as" "files of type" and scroll down to Publisher 98.

I thought that I'd let you know that your theory was right
Ed, and that you and Mary were right, my friend had a
newer version of Publisher.

He saved it as a 98 and I could open it just fine when he
resent it to me.

Thanks a bunch!
I really appreciate it! :D
