Publishing on GoDaddy's Free Page

Q

Quarterback

I have designed my page in Publisher 2003 and uploaded it to GoDaddy's Free
Page. Because the free page has an ad banner across the top, my content has
been shunted far to the right side, beyond the end of the banner, not under
the banner. Ordinary users see nothing but a blank page.

GoDaddy's Tech Support thinks there may be a way in Publisher to make my
page appear below the banner. I have not found anything about that in this
discussion group or in the MSFT MVP postings.

Is there something I can do?

Publisher produces pages with absolute positioning which creates this
problem with the Godaddy free hosting ad banner.

Here is a workaround that was posted by Troy some time ago:

"Instructions for publishing to an ad-supported free web site through
GoDaddy
using MS Publisher

1. Publish website to folder on local computer first
2. Open "index.htm" in browser window
3. Under the "Page" pulldown menu, select "View Source." This displays a
..txt file, showing the html code.
4. Using find & replace (under the "edit" menu), search for the first
instance of the word, "absolute" in the html code, and replace it with the
word "relative."
5. This process must be repeated for each page individually, by navigating
to each locally-published page from within a web browser, viewing the source
html code, replacing the first instance of "absolute" with "relative," then
saving the file before navigating to the next page.
6. Once finished making changes, the locally saved "index.htm" file and
accompanying folder must be copied and pasted, via ftp client to your
GoDaddy
website, and "voila," you should be up and running!"

Your alternatives are to spring for paid hosting, find alternative free
hosting or find alternative software to produce your site.

and you'll have to do this every time you want to update your web? sheesh,
no thanks...you can find hosts pretty cheap these days.

Yeah, I agree. Once the web publishing bug bites you and you realize all
the things that can be done, you'll kill to have your very own space.

David: Thank you for the work around. However, it has not worked for me.
First, I found the first instance of the word "absolute" and changed it to
"relative", then saved the file and uploaded it to GoDaddy's server. Since
mine is only one page, I thought, that should be enough.

I uploaded it using FileZilla Client, which I had downloaded a year ago but
never used. The program gave every indication it was working. My content
still appears to the far right, off the screen.

So I used find and replace to search and replace every instance of
"absolute" with "relative". When I reviewed the page, my content was
shuffled all around, pictures and captions were far from each other. Before
I reviewed it in my computer, I went ahead and uploaded it to GoDaddy. The
page on GoDaddy still is unchanged, so I guess I don't know how to upload
with FileZilla.

bites back. It looks like this will be the second Christmas in a row that
I'll have paid for a domain and failed to use it.

Quarterback,

Sorry the workaround didn't work for you.

It sounds like you have a relatively simple one page site, and that it is
primarily a Christmas greeting or card or some such. I would suggest that
you use the free GoDaddy web building software to build your page. You
already have your pictures, text and a general idea of how you want to
layout the page done, so all you would have to do is copy and paste, or
upload the images. I am pretty sure the GoDaddy sites are compatible with
their free hosting.

If you get serious and are trying to build a site for a business or
something, then ultimately you should probably plan on springing for paid
hosting. GoDaddy is less than $5 a month if I remember correctly.

Good luck.
