Publishing Questions (as promised) Please Help Me One Last Time

G

Gail

Hi Again
Yikes, I am in panic mode. I think I really screwed things up when I set up my website. I was checking out how to publish my site but I don't think I have the files and folders set up correctly in order to do it. It seems that in C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\My Documents\My Web Sites, I have a "private" folder, "website folder", "photos folder", "images folder", and "interactive buttons folder." In the "website folder" is where I was making all of my changes. I have four files (my four pages of the website) in that folder but there are also files from the old site. (If you recall I did not create a whole new site. I copied my existing site and was just modifying that one that was created for me by someone else.) How do I make sure that I publish only the four updated pages and not all of the other photos and such from the old website?

Thank you so much and I look forward to publishing TODAY!!!!!

Open your "new" site in FP and delete the old pages and files if they are in it
File Open Web/Site, or File Recent Webs/Sites
If they are not in it, they won't publish unless they are in subwebs / subsites and you publish using the include subwebs option

I am so afraid when I go to publish that everything will be sent because I have the folders set up wrong. I opened my new site in FP but there are many files and folders in the C:WebSites Folder. Should my "new" site just have the four pages and nothing else. In other words, right now in addition to the four pages, there is also a folder name banners and images. Can I just "move" those to another folder instead of deleting them in case I ever want to use them again

When I go to publish, how I do I distinguish that I just want that folder out of all of the folders that are in my website? It seems like they all show up when I did the File, Publish Site, FrontPage and typed in my remote website location
Thanks

I think you have this backwards, you need to open your local web and then publish to the remote web
site.

Let me try to get my answer another way. I know I am such a pain but you just can't imagine how
anxious I am to finally get this published today. After looking into this a bit further I did the

View, Remote Web Site, Click FrontPage, Type in my URL. Now, under local website, I

I updated along with a "banner" folder and an "images" folder. Can I just click local to remote,
and publish web site, and the pages that have four blue arrows will publish or is there more to it
than that? Should I move/delete those two folders before I publish?
Also, I noticed an option to "Optimize HTML." Should I do this too?
Thanks and waiting patiently for your great help!

I'm not sure I follow you. The procedure that I listed, does that not sound correct to you? The part where I mentioned local to remote, that is already highlighted with a green dot right above the button "Publish Web site" and below "Publish all changed pages" in the lower right-hand corner of the "Remote Web Site." I am really (desperate) to figure out the correct way to publish my updated site. Do you have any suggestions on how I can figure out the procedure so that I can do this correctly? I was unable to find anything in the Assistance section of Office Online
Thanks to everyone who can get my site LIVE tonight

Make sure that you are opening the local (C:\...) copy of your web first, use the File Menu | Open
Site command. Then select File Menu | Publish Site, then enter http://www.yourdomainname.com and
your login info.

Okay, I understand that, thank you. However, once my folders/files come up under the local site, isn't it correct that I have to double click the folder that has the updated pages in it? And, if that is correct, it brings up the updated pages with blue arrows to the left of each page. What does that mean? Above the four pages are two folders (images and banners) without blue arrows, what will happen to them when I hit publish
Thanks

Gail, I can not answer regarding the different page icons being displayed.

Once you have the local site open, you would just use File Menu | Publish Site to publish. All
changed page sure get published, unless you have marked them not to be published.

Okay ladies and gentlemen
I think I am at the point of publishing my site but as you well know I am overly cautious about everything I have done so far. Thomas has tried and I know that I have to File, Open Site, File, Publish Site. But when I get to the Remote Web Site Properties and then my website (along with other files/folders) is listed under "local web site" what I do next is double-click on the folder that has the updated pages, right? In that folder there are two more folders (banners and images) along with my updated pages. By those updated pages are blue arrows to the left. If at this point I just click on publish website will that do the trick? The green dot is already highlighted in "local to remote." Is that all I need to do? The other thing I could do is publish each page individually, right? and then I wouldn't have to worry about those two other folders

I truly think my files/folders are screwed up but hopefully I can get around that.

Any thoughts/suggestions/ideas/patience would be greatly appreciated

I have been at this all day. Maybe I should just take a chill pill (or a lite beverage) and tackle this again tomorrow. What is the worst that can happen when I hit publish? Maybe you don't want to answer that....

T

Thomas A. Rowe

Gail,

You just need to have the web open, then File Menu | Publish Site

Unless

The folder you are referring to have globes on them (these would be sub sites), then in that case,
you would double click to open each, then use File Menu | Publish Site and enter the destination as:
http://www.yourdomainname.com/subsitename

Hello again
Well I tried and it failed. So I did as you said and had a brew or maybe even two! However, I would really still like to have my site published in this century. Why is it that "The server connection timed out" when I went to publish my web site. I have my own ideas but hoping maybe I could get some help. I think that I set up my files/folders wrong in my website. I say that because I "published" the original website to "My Websites" and then did my editing from there. I think that I basically have two websites in that one folder. Would it be best to at least delete some images that I don't think I will be using anymore and hopefully that will allow me to publish my updated site without timing out? What is that "Optimize HTML" all about? Would that help
Thank you once again

What's the worst that will happen? Nuttin' honey,,, except you may have to republish. As long as your local copy is the way you want it, nothing bad will happen - but keep a brew handy jest incase
