publishing root file name to server

C

I am trying to publish a website I have been working on for years to a new
server. I am now using FP 2003. When I publish the site, it automatically
creates on the remote site the website file/folder name that I used on my
computer in FP and then copies all the folders and pages into that folder. So
then, when I go to the site after publication, there's an added filename to
the site URL so none of the links work, etc.

To explain further, I named the website "New CFA" in "My websites". When I
try to publish anything under New CFA, FP automatically creates the folder
New CFA and then places all the files/folders into that root folder. But I
don't want them there, I just want them to appear on the remote site without
the umbrella of New CFA...

My server folks said I should copy all the files/folders and just put them
into My websites and copy them then, without having them under the local site
name of New CFA but I was wondering if there was another way...

First of all a local (disc based or server based) site w/ a space in the name is illegal
Rename the local site New CFA to New_CFA
Then you publish to the remote root web site (http://yousitename.com/ using the steps in

Stefan,

I changed the name as you suggested but when I publish the site, it still
puts all the websites files and folders into a folder, now called New_CFA, on
the remote site. Again, this means that all my pathways on the remote site
have an additional folder that I don't have on the local site.

Any other suggestions?
thanks.

Open the web New_CFA in FP
The publish destination in File Publish should read
http://yousitename.com/
Does It?
Provide the real URL to the site

Well, the destination at the moment is the number URL - http://209.35.... -
because I am switching servers so I can't put the lettered name URL because
that's the site on the old server and we haven't switched the destination yet
because the "new" site is not completely free of kinks...

In the meantime, I have copied all the folders and files from my named
website on my computer, and have them in "My websites" just sort of floating,
without a name, and have been copying them that way. This has been working
but I can tell it's going to get confusing for me if they're not all
"bundled" under a named website. I tried also, now that they're mostly copied
onto the new server, to make an update from the named website, but again, FP
(or the server, I don't know which), created a folder on the remote site and
put the updated page into that folder, which would mean that it wouldn't
appear on the website unless I had that additional folder name in the URL...

Do you think if I named the website on my computer the same as the website
URL it would make a difference? They currently have two different names.

Rob,

What you say to do is exactly how this problem started...I had a website
with a name New_CFA but when I went to publish the site, the folder New_CFA
automatically got copied onto the remote site and all the folders/files of
the site were put into that main folder. That then changed the path for all
the files that were now on the remote site so that the links didn't work,
etc. I was told to create the "loose" pages to circumvent this problem so
that they were not copied onto the remote site under the umbrella of the
website name..

So, given that - any suggestions?

thanks.

That's probably your problem..you have a bunch of 'loose' pages/files.

You need to create a Web (Site)...doesn't matter what you call it on your local machine..it could be FRED and you would Publish FRED to http://whateveryourwebsiteis.com and it will work.

What you need to do is consolidate your new files into a new WEB on your machine. File | New Web (Site)..create an empty Web (call it whatever you want) and then Import your loose pages into it.

Then when you Publish, FP will know what to do with everything and the world will be a better place.

Can you provide a example of the path that you published the site too on the remote server, and if
the remote server has the FP extensions? This may make it easier for Rob or someone else to help you
with this issue.

If the remote server doesn't have the FP extensions and you are using FP's FTP mode then based on
how the host has the web folder location mapped could be the issue.

I did install the FP extensions before I published the site but I can check
with the ISP again to make sure they are there.

Regarding the path...I published to http://209.65.251.161 because the domain
name is not yet directed to the new site (we are switching servers for our
website). My website name on my local computer is New_CFA and I have many
files/folders in that New_CFA file. So when I published my index page and
another page, for example, a file would appear on the remote site, entitled
New_CFA and then in that folder would be the index page and the other html
page, called, for example, About CFA. Then, when I went to the website and
just typed in http://209.65.251.161/About_CFA, it wouldn't be there. I'd have
to type in http://209.65.251.161/New_CFA/About_CFA in order to see the page...

Does this make it clearer?
thanks.

On your local PC, does the New_CFA folder have a globe on it? Are there
folders named images and _private within the New_CFA folder?

It sounds like New_CFA is an ordinary folder contained in a parent web site
example: My_Webs is the website, and New_CFA is a folder in My_Webs.
If this is the situation then when you attempt to publish New_CFA, My_Webs
would take the root folder spot, and New_CFA will be a folder within the
website.
The cure is to right-click New_CFA and convert to web. Then open and
publish New_CFA.
