Publishing Site and Forms

R

Richard

We have our FP site hosted on a server using Unix.

We are only able to publish using FTP, because
the "normal" method brings up an error message that the
frontpage extensions have not been installed.

We are able to install and uninstall the extensions, and I
have done this several times, but the situation has not
changed. The provider insists that the extensions are
installed.

None of our forms will work, and we are not able to put up
a hit counter either.

Does anyone know what we should be doing (other than
switching to a windows server please)??

What version of FP are you using, and what version of extensions are
installed on the server?

Have you contacted your host?

Even if you repair the extensions, every time
you publish using FTP you break them again.
Therefore the forms and hit counter will not
work.
Repair the extensions and publish using http://yourweb.com
If you can't publish using http://yourweb.com
the extensions are *not* functioning, or the domain
is not registered with the name servers.
Can you open your web in a browser
using http://yourweb.com or http://www.yourweb.com ??
If not, the domain name has not propagated throughout
the domain name server system, and still needs to be
registered with your primary and secondary name server.
Have your host check this. It will take 24 to 48 hours
before it is *seen* by the servers after it is registered.

.
We are able to get to the site just fine, using the url
as described by you. In fact, the site has been up for
about two months (lockednloaded.net) and other than the
issues with the forms and hit counter, is working well.

Yes, several times in fact. They did have to do something
to their server - I cant recall exactly what it was, but
they "rebuilt" something. They insist that the FP
extensions are installed, and that the problem is at my
end.

Ok, the extensions are installed and working.

The host need to check the read/write permissions on the _private folder for
the hit counter and forms, if you are also storing the form data in a file.

Currently your acknowledge page point back to your local machine.

.../../My Webs/xLaL WebSite/lal_acknowledge.htm

Make sure that you have uploaded this file, then open the site directly in
FP, then the form, then reset the option for the custom confirmation page.

The above tells me that although the extensions appear to be installed,
the last update to the server / extensions was done December 30th.

I am still inclined to believe there is an extensions problem.

Also when publishing via ftp, FrontPage does not publish
all of the files required by the forms and hit counter.
You *must* publish via http:// in order for FrontPage
to actually publish all of the associated files.

I took a look. The extensions are working.
The hit counter is pointing back to your C:
drive.
Open the live site, remove and reinstall the hit counter
and save the page.

I cannot publish using the method you describe - I get an
error message that has a number of possible reasons, one
of which is that the FP extensions are not installed. So,
I have been forced to publish to the ftp instead.

Richard

I don't know the answer to this. I simply built the hit
page in FP on a page in our site. When I tried to publish
it (I have to do this using the ftp, not the "normal" FP
publish because FP says the server extensions are not
installed), I got yet another error message that some
components would not work.

Richard,

Steve's post was not a question, but pointing out that your hit counter
points back to your C drive.

Do a view source when looking at your page on the internet from IE, and look
for paths that point back to your C drive or folders on your C drive that
are not within your web (folder).

I don't know what page we have that has the confirmation
page that you mention (lal_acknowledge). There is an
application form, which should have rec_acknowledge as a
confirmation. But the application form is one that does
not work.

As long as you keep using FTP, you will keep corrupting the extensions, and
non of the FP run-time component will work, such as the hit counter, forms,
discussion web, guest book, etc.

Please indicate the exact steps you are taking to publish the web.

Can you open the web directly in FP on the remote server using File Menu |
Open Web or via IE, then File Menu | Edit with FP?

Do not use FTP
Each time you do, it corrupts the FP SE and breaks all the FP runtime components like your counter

I am sorry, but I am not sure what you mean. On the file
menu I do not see an option for opening a web.
