Publishing Site - how to get Navigation uploaded

D

Dan

I"m a victim of the "witty" virus, and it is now time to understand how FP
02 or FP03 really updates navigation changes from the local files to the
remote host. I find myself always having to recreate the navigation
structure on the remote host, and now I have a website that has over 100
pages...

I have never understood the difference between "let FP merge differences"
and "replace navigations on destination" - my experience neither of them
work.

Where can I read more about this, are there secret files that need to be
uploaded, should I stop designing sites with navigation?

thanks
dan

if you're on a windows server with FrontPage extensions this shouldn't be an
issue at all.
way back when I first started using FrontPage *2002. ;-), I used to get
messages like that all the time. then I found decent windows hosting and
all that stuff just magically disappeared.
I'm not saying that an attentive UNIX admin can't get the extensions to
configure right, I'm saying that most don't. on the other hand it's
probably easier on windows so you get lucky more often IMHO.
also don't transfer files to the server by any means other than having your
web open in FrontPage file/ publish web or file/ publish site. that will
circumvent plenty of problems just by itself.

All ways select the middle option, Replace Navigation Structure on Destination whenever you get this
prompt.

If you always work on your site locally, and then publish, your should rarely see this prompt.

I feel blessed that I didn't have to deal with the "old stuff" by the time I
came into it FrontPage 02 was pretty solid. 03 is great but I think it was
easier for a beginner with 02. IMHO

Thanks for all the comments, I think I now know the problem, I was
publishing a single page on many of my sites, because it seems I was always
republishing pages that didn't change. (Took to long). Sounds like I need
to always use Publish Site,

dan

The only time I ever had a major mess was when I chose Merge...yikes what a
mess.

Keep local backups and Replace Destination is my motto.

:)
