Pulling my hair out with normal template in 2003

Hi! I am using 2003 and I have made customizations to my toolbar and added
items to my AutoCorrect that do not stay.

I have tried re-saving my normal template, replacing my normal template. I
have repaired word and Office. I have uninstalled Office and re-installed
it. I have downloaded every needed update.

What can I do to get Word (and, yes, it's only Word) to keep any
customizations I make????

I am at my wits end....

Thanks! It seems like a pain but I'll try anything at this point to save
the larger pain of all the extra work I'm trying to save myself... )
