Purchased Office 2000 used, has it been installed/registered before?

I just purchased a full version of MS Office 2000 Premium used from an online auction. How can I check to see (outside of asking the seller) that the license key supplied to me with the media/information has not been registered/installed before?

Would it not have been prudent to ask this before purchasing the software?
It is an old program and the seller has either upgraded to a newer version
of the program, or burned a copy of the disks to keep for himself and sold
the original disks to make a profit and still retain the program.

Quite frankly I would never buy used software in this way as there is no way
of knowing it the seller has done this. That is why Microsoft has developed
product activation. At least you can install your software as there is no
way that anyone can find out if it is still on someone else's computer
without an awful lot of bother and expense.
