Putting the resources of different projects togehter in the masterproject

hi,

i maintained the resources in individual projects through manual
insertion of each department. The resources arent broken down t
collegues, but are on a department level (like 10people form departmen
ZZ) and there is no database behind.

Now i wanted to unite these "sub"projects in a masterproject
Therefore, i inserted the individual projects and linked them with th
masterproject. At them moment, i am facing the problem, that MSP doesn
sum the hrs of the resources up.

EG. NOW

Project Resource Hrs
-------------------------------
Sub A ZZ 8
Sub A XX 8
Sub B ZZ 8
Sub B VV 8
.....

Project Resource Hrs
-------------------------------
Master ZZ 8
XX 8
ZZ 8
VV 8
......

As i want to have a overview of all resources needed in the whol
company it should look like the following.

SHALL BE

Project Resource Hrs
-------------------------------
Master ZZ 16 (sum)
XX 8
VV 8

how can i do that out of the existing files?

thx a lot, rgds man

Hello manu,

See the help topic titled "Share resources using a resource pool" for
detailed steps in creating a pool file to consolidate the assignment
information.

I hope this helps. Let us know how you get along.

The short answer is to use a shared resource pool. Using a shared resource
pool and assigning the same zz resource to all sub-projects will merge the
assignments in a resource usage view (and the shared resource). There are
some considerations and if you haven't used it before you might want to read
up on it first. The biggest gotcha is to keep all plans in the same folder
and be careful making copies of the plans as you might double up the workload
of the shared resource.

If you only need resource data consolidated for reporting purposes then I
strongly recommend not having a linked consolidated project or a resource
pool as unless you and your PMs are very careful with their files corruption
will occur, it's when not if.

I create fresh consolidated projects each week with no links. This
automatically consolidates resource data as well. A recorded macro makes
doing this every week very easy (make sure first recorded command is File,
New). This method also creates a weekly snapshot.

hi,

not linking the projects, but just insert them manuelly is a good idea
thx :)

However, when i insert subprojects in my masterproject without link
then the dates move. I tryed it several times.
It also happens when i remove the exisitng linkage. E.g. i insert
project and link it. Everything is fine then. When i now remove th
linkage, then the dates move :( how can i stop that?

thx a lot, rgds manue

Hello manuel,

If you insert projects into a master project without links, the inserted
projects will be scheduled to begin on the start date of the master
project. Double check your master project start date.

I hope this helps. Let us know how you get along.
