PWA Explorer Crashes Unspecified Exception

N

Norm Rippon

I've seen this topic a few times as I trudged through the
newsgroup - but I have yet to find a viable solution.
Project Server 2002 Web Access causes Internet Explorer to
crash and spit out two Error Reports to MS. No suggestive
information beyond 'something is wrong'.

Accessing the main page is no problem, as this is a fairly
new installation and the main page has no grids - it
appears they are the culprits. Of course, no grids - no
value.

I Have: Ensured Settings & Security
I Have: Removed & Reinstalled ActiveX Controls
I Have: Experienced this on two seperate machines
I Have: Attempted to install the August 02' Patch which
complained about a version problem & did not install
I Have: Spent hours scouring the knowledgebases & TechNet,
as well as the "Grand Google Library" to no avail
I Have: Begun to drink heavily due to this issue

Any feedback from those who have experienced this issue
and survived it would be greatly appreciated.

Norm:

Take a couple asprins for the hangover and try upgrading MDAC on your
workstation. Go to download.microsoft.com and search for MDAC.

Norm:

What version of IE?
What are the error messages?
What version of MDAC is on the server?

IE Version 6.0.2800.1106

Error Message: 'Internet Explorer has encountered a
problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the
inconvenience' (not very enlightening)

Error report data seems to be just as vague.

Server is running MDAC 2.8, and I confirmed all
SharePoint updates.

At this point it's a guessing game. One thing you might try is deleting the
activeX objects forcing them to be reinstalled. Delete these from
windows\downloaded program files\PjAdoInfo2 Class and Pj10enuC Class. Check
SP level of OS. Review security settings. Upgrade MDAC on client. Try a
different logon on the same machine. Reinstall IE.

Progress update: I recieved a direct e-mail response to
this issue - wanted to share it for other poor souls who
go through this. Apparently my Google Taskbar offers a
popup blocker - useful tool - but causes general failure
when you try to load a grid in PWA.

Disabling this blocker allows me further progress - the
page no long shuts down IE - and I do see a 'Loading'
message within the grids - I still experience a vague
script error on the page - which I believe is linked to
the google taskbar as well - or perhaps the fact that I'm
forcing my internet traffic through port 89 for outside
access.

The interesting thing is that this blocker is always
running on my office workstation and I have no issues
with access.

The problem is not yet resolved, but I'm on the right
path.

Thanks for your advise, it truly helps the discovery
phase of reolution.

Norm:

We've heard of the new google popup blocker causing problems with Project
Central; you're the first to report problems with PWA.

Norm,

We were able to fix a laptop with this problem by running
Norton Systemworks on it. The OS was Windows XP, the IE
version was 6.0.2800.1106.

The user claimed the problem started happening after he
downloaded all of the latest Windows updates.

We had tried uninstalling and re-installing IE 6, that
did not help.

Again, whatever Systemworks does when you mostly default
your way through was able to fix the problem.

Good luck,
Jack O'Neil
