Q: Bullet list within a numbered list

G

G .Net

Hi

Can anybody tell me how to do the following?

I want to have an itemised list, which has a sub bullet list within it. For
example

1. This is the numbered field
@ bullet 1
@ bullet 2
2. This the second item
@bullet 1

where @ is the bullet symbol (I can't get it in plain text for this email).

I can create an itemized list or a bullet list but I can't seem to produce
both i.e. if I select itemized list and then press bullet I change the
itemized list I started with to a bullet.

Can anybody help?

Geoff

Note that that should be "as an Outline Numbered." There seems to be a
greater-than-usual disconnect between my brain and my fingers these days.

Hi Geoff:

You do this with an Outline List

I would suggest creating two styles for the purpose. Whatever you do, don't
use any of the List Bullet or List Number built-in styles, this will lead to
problems.

Let's call the styles Number List and Bullet List.

1. Create the two styles, but don't put bullets or numbers on them.
2. Now, format a paragraph with Number List Style. Go into
Format>Style>Modify>Format>Numbering>Outline Numbering
3. Choose the closest outline to your purpose (doesn't matter which one, but
don't use any of the Heading samples, because you may do peculiar things to
your heading numbering).
4. Click Customise, then MORE at the bottom to reveal the bottom half of the
dialog.
5. In the Link Level to Style box, select Number List as the style.
6. In the top left of the dialog, change the Level to "2"
7. At the bottom, change the Link Level to Style box to "Bullet List".
8. You now have a numbering outline with two levels, linked to two
independent styles. In Word, a bullet and a numbered list are the same
thing, it just doesn't increment "bullets".
9. Now, go back to the Level field and change that back to "1".
10. Define the numbering and formatting you want for the Number List.
11. Switch back to Level 2, and define the formatting and bullet you want
for the bulleted part of the list.
12. OK your way out.
13. Now go back to Format>Style>Number List>Modify and change the "Style for
Following paragraph" to "Bullet List".

Each time you format a paragraph with Number List, you will get a number on
it. Each time you press Enter, you will begin a new paragraph formatted
with Bullet List style which has a bullet on it.

You can switch back and forward between the two styles by placing your
cursor in front of the bullet or number and hitting tab or shift+tab.

Enjoy.

Hi Geoff:

You do this with an Outline List

I would suggest creating two styles for the purpose. Whatever you do, don't use any of the List Bullet or List Number built-in styles, this will lead to problems.

Let's call the styles Number List and Bullet List.

1.. Create the two styles, but don't put bullets or numbers on them.

3.. Choose the closest outline to your purpose (doesn't matter which one, but don't use any of the Heading samples, because you may do peculiar things to your heading numbering).
4.. Click Customise, then MORE at the bottom to reveal the bottom half of the dialog.
5.. In the Link Level to Style box, select Number List as the style.
6.. In the top left of the dialog, change the Level to "2"
7.. At the bottom, change the Link Level to Style box to "Bullet List".

12.. OK your way out.
13.. Now go back to Format>Style>Number List>Modify and change the "Style for Following paragraph" to "Bullet List".

Each time you format a paragraph with Number List, you will get a number on it. Each time you press Enter, you will begin a new paragraph formatted with Bullet List style which has a bullet on it.

You can switch back and forward between the two styles by placing your cursor in front of the bullet or number and hitting tab or shift+tab.

Enjoy.
