Query time to execute

Dear All,

I have two general questions that I would like some feedback on:

Is there any way to optimise queries such as starting with the largest
recordset on the left or always dragging from the one side to the many side
for pass through queries?

and,

Is there any algorithm that I could use (as a guide and I understand ONLY as
a guide) to calculate the length of additional time to execute if you were to
add another table of X amount of records to a pre-existing query that takes
on avergae 2 minutes to run?
