Question about authenticated email sending SMTP

My service provider has advised that Outlook and/or
Express be configured to avoid possible problems when
sending email for authenticaed SMTP. They havent given
any info as to what it exactly means only that if not
configured, there may be a possiblity of problems sending
mail. Please can you explain what this means and how it
works? I receive their mail via outlook. Does hotmail
need this configuration to?

Perhaps they mean only that you have to authenticate to your ISP's SMTP
server to send mail.
