Question about clip art, etc

C

Carrie

Whenever I use clip art in Publisher or Word (2000) it says to insert the
CD (#2) that has it on it. Which I do. Before I reinstalled WINDOWS a few
weeks ago, and had to put everything in again, I had the clip art on my
computer. So, if I needed something it was right there and I didn't need to
keep putting in the CD.

I have tried this several times, in Word (mainly, though I use clip art
in Publisher too and have that function, using clip art, enabled- after it
asked if I wanted to) The CD brings up the install and I click ADD OR REMOVE
FEATURES and click on the clip art and "run from computer". It goes through
it, the blue loading/adding line and updating settings, but the next time I
need something, once again it says I have to put in the CD to get it (most
of the pictures).

Is there a place it woud be on my computer (a file) I could look and see
if it's
installed? I don't have a very new, big computer (WIN 98 SE and about 5
years old) and I've noticed other problems with it, I feel is due to it's
age and size. I think my kids are getting me a newer/bigger PC for Mother's
Day. I keep running into this, like something won't work, or it freezes or
something doesn't work with WIN 98 (anymore).

It's frustrating, but I do the best I can with what I have, and keep
pulling back to learning. There's usually something I can be doing and
learning, even if it's just in a book.

I once read a joke about "you know you spend too much time on the
computer if.." and one of them was "you go to bed at night reading a book
about Word". Well, I've laughed, finding myself doing just that. Though
right now it's "Desktop Publishing for Dummies".

I find it's easier to learn by doing though, like think of something I
want to do and then try it, and figure it out and ask.

I have done the tutorial that comes with Publisher 2000 (which seems to
be good and in depth).

One problem I've been having it getting things set up so they print
right. I get them set up, but then don't seem to with my printer (I just got
a Lexmark X5150 which has a mind of it's own). Before this, I had (for 6
years) a Canon BJC-250 which wasn't as complicated and probably would have
just printed whatever I set up AS I set it.

I really love doing this- learning desktop publishing (Word and
Publisher) and Adobe PhotoShop- and taking pictures. So, I don't get or stay
discouraged too long. I also would love to get into doing something like
this to earn some money (at home, I don't have a car, and no formal training
at anything, and I'm not "young" anymore) I know,.I'm not the only
grandmother/greatgrandmother who is learning and loving computer stuff. Is
there really something I could do (even on a small scale) in these fields?
Designing, setting up booklets, making logos, selling photos (via internet)
etc? Doing what I love and actually being productive seems like the ultimate
dream come true.

Finding this newsgroup (again) is like Forrest Gump's box of chocolates.

The important thing is what search terms you use. If you try something and
don't get an appropriate response, rephrase it.

(BTW, MSN is not the same thing as the Microsoft site. ;-) )

Yes, I guess I knew that. It just seems like it's used as a shortcut term.

Yes...

I am NOT a Microsoft/Bill Gates basher. I admire the man, he did what he
loved, followed his heart and was in the right place at the right time (and
took advantage of this).

If it wasn't for him I (and a lot of others) wouldn't have computers and
the internet.

A few years ago I read a book he wrote (something about what is coming
next?) He told about his early years and how computers work (and how they
started) so I "sort of" got the idea about them. Though, overall it's mind
boggling.

"The Road Ahead"?

Not a bad read :)

MSN is the Microsoft Network - creators of MSN Messenger and the MSN
internet access service. It is owned by Microsoft.

The Knowledge Base search is can be a downright pain to use. If I want to
search the KB, I tend to use Google instead, as it is so much quicker.

Yes, that is the book. I happened to see it on the "new book" shelf at our
library at the time. It was more interesting than I first thought it would
be and I learned a lot from it.

I found the pictures of the first computers (boxes with switches!) from
the Popular Science type magazines, fascinating. Imagine the mind that could
see those and imagine they would be something a lot more (someday)?

I remember the first computer game (at that time for t.v.) (Pong!) we
got one for our kids and all their friends would gather after school to play
it. Hitting a ball back and forth with a curser, with a beeping noise. We
went through Atari and Sega and now my grandkids are on Play Station.

Quite a difference in these, too.

I remember our Atari would sometimes mess up and show all 000 and 111
on it.
