Question about different Office 2008 editions

Version: 2008
Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)
Processor: Intel

I previously had Office 2008 standard edition installed on my MacBook. Shortly after the Special Media and Standard editions were eliminated, I noticed some Office features did not work in the office programs. However, when I switched to another computer I own running Office 2008 Home and Student edition, nothing was affected. I uninstalled and reinstalled the standard edition and the problems still persisted. Did these problems occur because of the edition series being discontinued?

Absolutely not -- there is no difference in the Word, PowerPoint, Excel &
Entourage software from one "edition" to another. The exception being the
new Business Edition, but the only program that's changed is Entourage by
way of inclusion of EWS (Entourage Web Services). Otherwise, the difference
between editions is accounted for by the Licensing for each and what's
included above & beyond the "big 4" :)

If one system is having a problem with Office there must be something
endemic to that particular Mac. If you'll provide complete descriptive
details as well as specific update levels for Office 2008 & OS X perhaps you
can get those issues resolved.

I had an Office 2008 Home and Student Edition as well as Standard edition discs. I installed the Home & Student and everything worked. Here is what I was experiencing shortly after the discontinuation:
In all Office apps., I was unable to add new words to the dictionary. When right clicked or brought up in the spell checker, the word "Add" was dimmed. Also, in Entourage some emails that would be would be sent would never get delivered. It would say that they were sent but the recipient would never get them. This was random.

I don't seem to be having this problem now - hopefully it doesn't pop up in the future.

I have an Small Business Server 2003 at work. I understand that the Special
Media Edition will not work with this version of exchange. Does this mean I
am to use the Education version in order to access exchange 2003?

I think you might be confusing the Special Media edition with the Business
Edition.

Special Media is just the Standard plus Expressions Media.

The Standard version has Exchange support. 12.xxx

Entourage 2008, Web Services Edition (v13) requires:

Microsoft Exchange Server: Connectivity to Update Rollup 4 for Microsoft
Exchange Server 2007 Service Pack 1 (KB952580) or later version.

Update Rollup 4 for Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 Service Pack 1 (KB952580)
must be applied to both the Mailbox server and the Client Access server
roles.

The Business Edition is essentially the Entourage 2008, Web Services Edition
(v13) with a few extras.

The Home & Student 2008 version does not have Exchange support.

In summary, you need the standard version of Entourage. Sometimes you can
find the Special media version cheaper than the standard version. Here are
the current Amazon prices:

Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac Special Media Edition Price: $174.99

Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac Price: $186.00

Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac Upgrade Price: $167.99 (requires you have an
older version of Office installed or have the CD installer)
