Question about "Normal.dot"

R

Robert Judge

I use WORD 2002. Lately, when I exit WORD, I get the
message:
"The file normal.dot already exists. Do you want to
replace the existing file?"

I am not aware of anything I am doing different in WORD
lately. Why am I getting this message? It does not
allow me to answer "no", so I answer "yes".

I will appreciate advice.

This sort of problem is often caused by the Norton Office Plug-in or the
Microsoft Works Suite Add-in for Word.

Dear Suzanne:
Yes, I had installed (only) WORD 2002 as part of
Microsoft Works. It was a normal installation and I was
not aware that I was installing the "Microsoft Works
Suite Add-in for Word." Is there any solution to this
problem? It is persistent and annoying. It is taking me
several minutes now to close WORD because it keeps giving
me messages about saving Normal.dot.

I will appreciate any advice.

Wendy:
I looked through my programs and I there is no listing
for "Microsoft Works Suite Add-In for Word." Can and
should I uninstall Microsoft Works, or will that also
uninstall WORD?

If you installed only Word and not Works, then probably the add-in was not
installed. Very likely the message is coming from another add-in. Another
likely culprit is the Office Plug-in in Norton AntiVirus.

Open Norton AntiVirus and click on the Options menu. Choose Miscellaneous.
If you see "Enable Office Plug-in," clear the check box. If this is not the
issue, there are plenty of poorly written add-ins that could be causing the
problem.

As for installing Word without Works, see "Works Suite 2000: How to Install
Individual Programs Included in Works Suite 2000" at
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=245829. That's for Works Suite 2000, but
the principle should be the same for later versions. FWIW, it gives
instructions for installing Word and the Works Suite Add-in, which it seems
to me would be pointless without Works, so perhaps it's assuming you'll
install Works as well.

Suzanne:
I did install WORKS, although I only installed WORD and MSMONEY of the
serveral WORKS applications. I don't think I could have installed WORD
without installing WORKS. Can I install WORD without installing WORKS? If
so, is that what I should try?
I do use Norton Antivirus, but I've had that installed for a long time,
and I'm not aware of any "Office Plug-in in Norton Antivirus."
