I typed a letter to a principal of an elementary school and was
informed there were question marks everywhere in doc. It was sent as
an attachment. This has happened may times before as recipients will
reply to an email and ask what's up with all of the question marks.
This is infuriating! I have the Microsoft Word 2004 for Mac version

Hi Colleen:

You're using an old Mac font that the Windows side doesn't have an
equivalent for.

Make sure your version of Times New Roman and Arial is the latest version
supplied with Microsoft Office. Remove the old versions.

The other font you may have to replace is your Symbol font.

You will find the latest versions of these fonts in your Microsoft Office
2004 folder.

Then use those fonts for preference. If you want to leave your old OS 9
fonts installed, try not to use them in Word, particularly if sending to
Windows.

You may wish to check that your Word>Preferences>Save preference is set to
"Word 2004 Document" and not one of the older formats. If your default Save
format is one of the old ones, it doesn't support Unicode, and that would
cause it.

Ideally, find and remove your Normal Template (With Word quit). Word will
create a new one when I next starts: replacing the old Mac font with a
modern Unicode version that will work everywhere.

Also make sue that your email program is set up to encode attachments using
MIME rather than UUEncode of MacDouble. It shouldn't matter, but again, if
you send in MIME, it will work everywhere and you do not have to think about
it again.

Hope this helps
