See <URL: http://www.mvps.org/word/FAQs/AppErrors/MissingMenusEtc.htm>.
There is a range of possible problems and related solutions. You'll find
them all there, I think.

OK, that is a start, but it isn't a fix. That step is a diagnostic. It
launches a limited version of Word, sort of like starting Windows in Safe
mode. It will let you get work done but isn't a solution. Keep going in the
process outlined on that page to locate the source of your problem.

Actually, apparently it sometimes *is* a fix. Sometimes just starting with
/a once evidently delivers a swift kick to the Registry, and it sorts itself
out with no further effort on the user's part. If this *doesn't* work, then
the remaining steps can be taken.

I stand, or sit, corrected. I just found out yesterday that this apparently
resets the setting for the Formatting and Standard Toolbars sharing a line
(in at least some versions). I guess what I should have said is that if the
problem still exists next time the user starts Word normally, further steps
are needed.
