but not over the entire slide presentation? I'm not very familiar wit

Insert it on the slide in question, and pick Custom Animation. You might
want to use the Help in Powerpoint to familiarize yourself with the
features.

Insert sound to a slide

PowerPoint -> Insert (Menu) -> Movies and sounds -> ...

Insert sound as transiton

PowerPonit -> Slide Show -> Slide Transtion -> Modify Transition
(Right Panel) -> Sound -> Other Sound
