In page view "L" shaped brackets apprear in the four corners of the

I suspect they are crop marks. If you're using Word 2007, go to Word
Options from the Office button, then click Advanced. Scroll down to
'Show document content' and uncheck 'Show crop marks'. In earlier
versions, it's Tools/Options/View, then uncheck 'Text boundaries'.

That wasn't it, but you were on the right track. After searching the MS
Knowledge Base (MSKB), I discovered it was a bug in Office 2003. If you
have an Asian Language installed and are in Print Layout view, crop/margin
marks will appear in all four corners. To remove these marks just uninstall
the asian language and restart. That's it!

I've been searching for weeks (ugh!) to find the fix. For others who may be
experiencing this issue, here's the link to the MSKB article.
