FP 2002 - Win XP - Virus Free System according to Norton

When I try to make changes to my local web site I get an error message
saying that "The page PontOldsBuick/70PontGTOJudgeWhite.htm has been
modified by (unknown) on 31 Dec 1969 19:00:00 -0500" ... just like I
would if I had modified the server version on another computer. Now I
know that no one has messed with my system or my local site. According
to Norton the system is free of any and all virus and I've run both
SpyBot and Lavasoft to clean up any spyware (if that even matters) plus
I've also recalculated the hyperlinks as someone suggested when I first
posted this.

I don't want to publish the live site to my local system because I've
made several changes that I don't want to loose. And I'm not entirely
sure if this would be a good move without knowing what exactly is going
on with my computer.

Has anyone ever run into this problem and is there a solution?

Based on the timestamp, I think the clock on the server may have an issue.
1 Jan 1970 00:00:00 is the "beginning of time" on many OSes. 19:00 -500 =
00:00. I believe, more specifically, that this is the start point for time
calculations on Unix/Linux servers. Do you happen to know if your host is
running Unix?

I think it's safe to say that your files haven't been modified. Since it's
an HTML file, you should be able to view source of the document on the
server and verify this. But if you're paranoid (and just because you are
doesn't mean they're _not_ out to get you) you can always publish from the
server to a different location on your local system. So, for example, if
your local copy of the web sits at C:\mywebsite, when you publish from the
server, publish to C:\mybackupsite.

If you are interested in doing a more thorough file by file comparison once
you have a local copy, take a look at the open source WinMerge application:
http://winmerge.sourceforge.net/

but that's just it... it's not coming from the server, it's coming from
my system. I'm getting this error message when I try to modify my local
site before I even hit publish. All I have to do is make something as
simple as a text change and then hit save and I get the error message.

I've even had the host double check the server and they tell me
everything is just fine.

Is your system clock correct and are you always working on the site from the same Windows login
account?

Are the files being open by any other program (eg Notepad)?

Matt,

My apologies. I misread your original post and thought you were talking
about the files on your server having an odd date.

Why not just try publishing from your live site to a different location on
your drive and checking out those files?

M

Matt

well I was going to use the live site to just overwrite my local one and
start fresh, but I'm worried that if this is some strange problem with
FrontPage or my system then the next time I publish to the server I
could corrupt my live site as well as my local one.

Open your online site in FP and run a Tools Recalculate Hyperlinks, then use a File Publsih (all) to a new different local
location - say C:\MyNewWeb
- Open the new local web in FP and all the files should show you as the creator in View Reports All files
