Random changes in the view in Outlook message list

We are using Outlook 2002 under Windows XP.

The view settings for the inbox list of messages includes
various items, e.g. "importance" (a flag
symbol),"attachment" (a paper clip symbol) and
includes "icon" (envelope symbol with indications of
replies and/or forwarding).

At random times something (a gremlin?) arbitrarily and
without warning deletes the "icon" column. I have figured
out how to put it back, but would like to know how the
column gets deleted without any input from me. Is there
something that can inadvertently get clicked on that
deletes the column?

Thanks for your help.
