Randomly moving graphics

When I paste graphics (from Paint or wherever) into a Word document, I have
a very hard time getting them to stay where I want them.

I have tried a number of settings on the "Advanced" section of the Format
Picture window, and none seem to have any effect at all. I do have exact
line spacing set, which I see in other related posts here may cause
problems, but even when I turn that off as a test, it still happens (and I
can't turn it off "forever" because that spacing is part of our branding and
has to be there).

Any ideas? I've finally resorted in general to pasting the images in and
then going ahead and finalizing my text ... and then spending a frustrating
ten minutes or so moving the graphics until they are more or less where I
want them. It seems that whenever I edit text or move a graphic, all the
others jump around.

Thanks for any help you can give.

Answering my own question (sort of) in case anyone has the same problem: It
seems that when a .gif is pasted into a document, it is more likely to
exhibit random antics and move around uncontrollably than a .jpg. I took my
problem .gif graphic, converted it with PAINT to a .jpg, and cut-and-pasted
in the piece of it that I needed. It still moved around a little, but it
was controllable - unlike the .gif.
