RBS Setup recommendations for EPM

Marg

I'm new to the EPM world and am looking for advice/best
practices in setting up a resource breakdown structure in
EPM.

Are there any shortcuts or things I should avoid?

Thanks in advance,

Marg

Welcome to the newsgroup. Since you are new, your might consider keeping
your RBS as simple as possible. Since it has the possibility to control
access to all kinds of information, take your time in gathering
requirements.

The RBS is fairly easy to set up, but you don't want to be making too many
changes to it over time, so try to make sure everyone agrees before you take
the time and trouble to assign RBS values to resources.

For a basic implementation, the departmental organization chart will provide
a good outline. If you have not downloaded the Microsoft Online books, you
should do so, as they provide a pretty explanation on how to set up an RBS,
given a number of variables.

So does the excellent book from MSProjectexperts.com.

I agree with mark that you should keep it as simple as possible. I have
found, because of the way that the RBS is tied to the security model in
Project Server that an RBS that models the organizational structure of
your company is best. Other than that the references that mark pointed
you at are great.

The previous posts are all very sound advice. Just remember one simple rule
when creating an organizational RBS, especially as it pertains to timesheet
approvals and resource assignment by Resource Managers. The manager of an
organization has to be able to "see" their resources, therefore the manager
has to be on a RBS level one higher than their resources. If the manager has
an assistant to review and approve timesheets, that person has to be on the
same level as the manager (or at least one level above the resources.
