To create an RBS field outline code structure, you need to model your
company's "org chart" in the RBS field. For example, a company for which I
used to work might have built the RBS field outline code structure based on
this generic outline:
Corporation
Business Unit
Department
Manager
Team Member
In the company's real RBS code, there would have been multiple Business
Units such as Foods, Grain, Petroleum. Beneath each Business Unit would
have been multiple Departments. For example, the Foods business unit would
have had departments such as Advertising, IT, International Sales, National
Sales, and Production. Depending on your company's organizational
structure, the RBS field outline code structure could be fairly short or
even fairly long.
Once you have created your RBS outline code structure, you will need to
select an RBS value for each resource in your Enterprise Resource Pool.
Doing so will show Project Server "who manages whom" within your
organization. For example, if Gary is at the Department level in the RBS,
and Dale is at the Manager level of Gary's Department branch, and Mickey is
at the Team Member level of Dale's Manager's branch, then Project Server
would infer that Gary directly manages Dale and that Dale directly manages
Mickey. It would also infer that Gary indirectly manages Mickey.
The RBS field is also used in Categories in PWA as a part of Project
Server's security model. If you open any Category for editing in PWA, you
will notice that there is both a Projects section and a Resources section of
the page. In the Projects section, there are four checkbox options when the
second of the two Project options is selected. Several of these checkbox
options are used on conjunction with the RBS. In the Resources section,
there are three checkbox options when the second of the two Resource options
is selected. These three checkbox options are also used in conunction with
the RBS.
That's a general explanation of how things work. For more information about
the RBS and how it fits into the Project Server security model, refer to the
following link to download the Project Server 2003 Administrator's Guide:

Hope this helps.

Dale - do you have any examples on how to START setting up an RBS? All the
explanations abouit what RBS does and what it can do for you is fine, but I
need to see how I start creating this table. For example:
1) Do I input a number for each level in the organization.
2) Do I input text for a description of the level or the postion.
It's all very vague to me and I would really like to get this setup since
we are in the PILOT phase of our EPM Project and have only about 50 team
membes and 20 project managers entered into our Enterprise Resource Pool.
