Re-assigned tasks still appear on assignment views

I have cases where the PM has removed the originally assigned resource from a
task and re-assigned to another person. However, the resource assignment view
is showing the old assignment with an "X" as well as the new assignment. This
persists even after republishing assignments.

I want the old assignment not to appear on the assignment view.

What needs to be done?

Thanks, the SQL info may just come in handy.
We found that when the resource hides the assignment, it disappears from the
assignment view, but no sooner.
