re-install over existing installation

anyone ever try to simply re-install over top of an existing installation ?
I'm considering trying it in order to enter a new product key but i'm not
sure if it will retain the existing projects. We are also using wss. Our
project server is down due to an original installation being done with an
eval copy and i'm running out of options as to what to try.

Remi:

Here’s the best approach. Take all of your projects, ER Pool, and EGT off
line. Additionally, move all WSS content offline.

Start from scratch with a fresh installation and import the ER Pool,
Projects, EGT and WSS content.

You could try using site restore utilities to restore your WSS sites from
backed up data, but the project server component will require a fresh install.

Thanks Sean...we know now that an upgrade wont work from eval to full
version. We know that install over top is not an option either and is not
recommended by anyone. As you say go offline install fresh and import
everything seems to be the only option. Our case is even more complex because
of errors made during initial setup like dashes in the server name, local nt
authentication for wss rather than AD and 0 raid. So a fresh install is quite
necessary...and is expected to be done in a day...Mmmmm

How did you take all the projects offline if your Eval license had expired? I
am in an exactly similar situation (Eval expired without notice and trying to
figure out how to install the licensed copy without loosing project data).
Any suggestions from your experience will be appreciated.
