Re-installs on every Word launch

C

I've installed Office 2003 Pro on this laptop and it works great from ALL but
one login identity.... (I have one "Admin" account with privilege and a
separate "limited" account for each child, my wife and 2 (work, play) for
myself.)

In JUST ONE of these logins, everytime I launch Word an "install" status
window pops up and Word goes through an install process just like it was the
first time I used Word with this long. ...it completes and Word comes up and
works normally.

But this "initial install" never sticks... it repeats every time BUT ONLY ON
FOR THIS USER ID. All my other accounts work normally.

I've uninstalled and reinstalled as Admin...
I've run the Help | Detect and Repair...
All updates/patches installed...

Nothing seems to fix this problem.

Any suggestions?

The fact that the user with the problem is a "limited" user is not the
problem. If I change that login to be an "administrator", the problem is
unchanged.

Further info: PowerPoint and Publisher works fine, but Excel has the same
problem as Word.

It takes about 45 seconds for Word or Excel to come up because of this
"install" being repeated every time I launch. PowerPoint and Publisher pop
up quickly as you would expect.

Hi,

It's possible there's a problem with the profile of this user account.
Have you considered creating a brand new account for this user?

There's certainly something changed between 2000 and 2003 in this
regard. I'm finding on new corporate builds, that Word will launch setup
on the first ever run, even with a roaming profile! This should NOT
happen and did not happen under 2000. What ever is causing it, it's not
good because the whole point of MSI technology is to be able to do
completely hands-free installs. Luckily on machines that have already
been built, it's not a problem and each user's settings are seen correctly.

I agree there is something in the profile, but I hate nuking an old and
complex profile because of this. I hope someone can suggest which registry
entry or profile setting is causing this.... I'd much rather just "prune"
the profile than nuke it.
