Re-numbering a list in WORD 2007

How does one re-number an existing list starting with an ARBITRARY number?

In previous version of WORD, there was an explicit window of “Start with...â€
There is no such option in WORD 2007. In Home --> Paragraph --> Numbering,
all lists start with 1.

Thank you for your help.

If you right click on a number, the flyout menu gives options to continue
numbering and set numbering value. And at the bottom of the numbering
library, there's: set numbering value.

Thank you Pam,

I know about the right-click option and I tried to use it. There is a
“small†problem – it DOES NOT WORK on existing lists as it should have.

You can set the number of the first item on the list to an arbitrary n but
you cannot get the rest of the list to follow with (n+1), (n+2),,,,

This is one of many examples where MS destroyed something that worked fine
in previous versions.

I did try the start numbering at... feature, before I sent the message, on
list items made by clicking the numbering icon, which it seemed you had used.
I just tried it again, and it still works. I also works on paragraphs in the
list number style. BUT it did not at first work on my multilevel list. But
(1) I used it successfully in a project less that 3 months ago and (2) this
is my test doc–it's probably had a dozen lists applied and reapplied at one
time or another. So I suspected the heading 2 and later heading 1 that
didn't change and were parts of a different list. I selected the whole doc,
clicked none in the multilevel list library, and then selected one of the
heading-linked numbering schemes.

You can do something similar for numbered lists by clearing then reapplying
the numbering or the style (as appropriate) a group at a time.

Note that this kind of problem (separate lists within a doc) is not new to
W2007.

Thank you Pam,

The feature indeed works in some, BUT NOT ALL, instances of interest. E.g.,
it does not facilitate continuous numbering when a list is occasionally
interrupted with un-numbered paragraphs. (Such lists were feasible with WORD
2000.)

The list numbering feature in WORD 2007 is definitely much more cumbersome
and MUCH LESS USEFUL than in WORD 2000. WORD 2007 was supposed to be superior
to previous versions, wasn’t it..?

Works fine for me with a list that is interrupted with an un-numbered
paragraph

1 text
2 test
text
3 text

then if I right click on the first paragraph and via the Set numbering value
item I change the starting number to 2, I get

2 text
3 text
text
4 text

In that aspect, I think that the numbering in 2007 is actually easier that
with earlier versions.

They are not just feasible but workable in W2007 where "continue numbering"
is just a right click away.

...And you're welcome.

I'm sorry to be cranky, but I can't make this feature work at all. When I
right click on the first number in a list, the Set Numbering Value item is
grayed out ... what do I do?

Thanks,
Angelia
