Read and write data to com port

I have a USB I/O interface with digital and analog inputs and outputs. The
device simulates a serial com port on my MAC. How do I use Excel to send
text strings to a COM port.

Is there a way I can use Excel to determine the identity of the com port,
eg. com3?

As far as I know, there is no way to do that. There used to be an interface
to the serial ports that was accessible to XLM macros, but that only worked
with Operating systems before X.
