Read Backup of outlook.pst

I have backed up my e-mail simply by keeping a copy of outlook.pst. Is
there any simple way of reading what is on these files without overwriting
the current live version of the file?

You can open it using file, open, outlook data store to view the contents...

File>Open>Personal Folders File or Outlook Data File, depending on your
Outlook version.
