read only errors

Help!!I am using word in office xp version 2002 and i keep getting the files are "read only." THis is occurring on computers that are not networked. I tried downloading the service packs 1 &2 and that does not solve the problems. under properties these items are not marked as readonly. The only way to solve this problems is renaming the file or performing a restart. both are not good answers. does anyone know how to solve this problem. i am ready to toss word and office and look for another program.
