Hello

Having problems with files being read only. Excel tells me the file is in
use by another user, but i know this is not the fact. The document is
stored on out win 2000 server. We all have Office XP. Is there a way to
unlock this file? I know i could save it as something else, but that not
actually fixing the problem.

TIA

One possible cause.......

Excel stores in Windows\Temp(win98) folder a copy(s) of any file
that is open.

Sometimes this *.tmp file is not deleted from the Temp folder when
you close out Excel(maybe a crash of Excel?) or the file, so Excel
thinks it is still open and locked for editing.

You can try a re-boot and see if that clears it up. If not, after a
re-boot, clear out your Windows\Temp folder.

If using WinXP your Temp folder would be under user.......

Documents and Settings\User\Local Settings\Temp

If on a network, re-booting the server may be the only solution.

I have a similiar problem, but the difference is I have
files located on a web server (unix box) and I open up
the .xls file through IE. The problem I got is after I
open a particular file once and close, from now on I will
always get "File in Use" warning if open the same file
again.

I knew if I delete all temporary file, i will have a clean
file, but is there any way to not have this happen?

Thanks.

Reboot between file openings, store file on your computer, open file and never
close it

There have been many posts in this forum regarding problems with Excel reporting "Locked for Editing" when, in fact, the file is not in use by anyone else. Most of the recommendations for fixing this problem involve deleting .tmp files. That didn't help my situation, but I've now discovered the problem.

For Excel workbooks containing Macros, if the Indexing service is activated, it will randomly cause the workbooks to report that the file is in use. To get rid of this problem, disable the indexing service by going to Start|Programs|Administrative Tools|Services and disable the "Indexing Service". That eliminated the problem for me (Windows XP, Office 2003).
