Read-only Frustrations - HELP!

Suzie Raboin

I have a database that I sent on CD to a user. It was created in Access 2002
and we are both running that version of access. However, when she copies it
to her computer it is read-only. The read-only flag is not set on the
database or the folder that it is in. We did discover that it is working on
another computer at her work that is running Access 2002 but Windows XP (she
has Windows 2000). I had her run all of her windows and office updates but
it still doesn't work. I get the feeling that it is because of the
difference in the windows versions but can't be sure. Please help!

Thanks in advance,
Suzie

Any time you copy to a CD it becomes read only.
All you need do is copy the database from the CD into any folder,
desktop, etc., in the computer. Then Right-click on the database,
select Properties.
Uncheck the Read only box. It is now ready for use.

CD-ROMs are, by nature, read-only. A database written to CD, then copied to
a hard drive will have its Read-Only attribute set.

Has the user right-clicked the file on the end-target computer, selected
Properties, and unchecked the Read-Only attribute?

Are you working with an .mdb file or an .mde file?

Good luck

As Fred says elsewhere in this thread, when you copy a file to a CD, the
read-only attribute is set. Windows XP is smart enough to unset the
attribute again when you copy the file from the CD to a hard disk, but that
is a new feature of Windows XP, it didn't happen in earlier versions of
Windows. So the fact that the problem occurs on a Windows 2000 PC but not on
a Windows XP PC is further evidence that this is the cause of the problem.

As I stated in my original post, the read-only attribute is not set on the
file nor the folder that it is in. If there is another place to look other
than right clicking on the file and going to properties I would appreciate
the help. I have checked every place that I know and it looks as if it
should be working.

Can you describe what happens when the user tries to edit data on the
problem PC? Is there an error message?
