"Read only" on NAS drive accessed remotely

I have an NAS drive that permits me to access files via the internet. When I
access the files via the network the file can be edited directly. If i access
via the internet and select Open the file comes up Read Only. Is there some
way to change security so the the file comes in editible format. I am using
Vista Home Premium and Office 2007. My Word and XLS files have the same
problem.

I have a coworker who must access the files as well. He uses XP and Office
2002. (I run Office 2007 in compatibility mode so that we can both work on
the files.)

When accessing the files via the internet the share folders are password
protected.
