Read only Scare

You know what's weird?

When using an excel list as a database to merge with a word document, and
then want to look at this Excel list to see what's going on, I open it up,
and it comes up as a read only document.

It doesn't seem weird to me. When Word opens an Excel workbook for use
as a merge source, it puts a file lock on the workbook to prevent
corruption of the merge. That lock prevents anyone from opening the file
and deleting or modifying the merge fields.
