Read -Only word documents

I have several users that cannot seem to get any of their
word documents to open with out being read only. The files
are not used by anyother users. They can only save changes
made to the document by using save as. When they open the
document they chose to save as they get the same read only
error message. Let me know if any one has any idea how to
fix this.

Thanks.

I had that problem with several users a few months ago.
Microsoft sent me the hotfix Q810907, which fixed it
completely.
If you look at the hidden files in the same folder as a
document you have open, you'll see that Word creates a
shadow file that looks the same as the true file except
for the first two characters - the first one is a "~".
Word creates this temp file when someone opens the
document to prevent two people from opening the same
document at the same time. When a second person tries to
open the doc, Word sees the temp file and sends a message
that the doc can only be opened as a read-only. When the
first person closes the document, the file is supposed to
be automatically deleted, but for some reason sometimes
it doesn't. I explained this to a Microsoft tech
assistant and he sent me that hotfix for free and took
off the technical support charge...
