Read Only

Have a new computer with XP. Now all my word and excel
documents I created on old computer (Office 97 - Windows
98) have been changed to "Read Only" documents. I cannot
make changes or "save" or even "save as". I have turned
off the "Read Only" function wherever I can but it
doesn't seem to make any difference. It will not let me
rename or anything. What can I do?

You can try this....
copy the files to a folder in the root of C
eg. "c:\readonly"
Then go to DOS and try the attrib command:
Attrib -r [dirve:][path][filename] /D

you can also look on the web for a office file repair app.

Hope this works.

I forgot...this could be a simple rights issue. meening
that you dont "own" the files
....moveing the files from one folder to another could
solve your problem.....the user that created the
files "the owner" to start with may differ from the user
you are using....the owner of the file is the user that
created the file...so under windows if u "move" a file
you actually "creat" the file in the new location and
delete it from the old...thus you become the files owner.

Did you copy the files across using a CDR? When you write to a CDR,
documents automatically get a Read Only attribute. Just select them all in
Windows Explorer, right click on the selection and clear the Read Only
attribute.

Thank you, Thank you.

You were right on Brad. It was an ownership issue. When I
moved a file to a new folder I made it took the "Read
Only" off and I was able to change and print. I am
eternally grateful. I guess I don't have to shoot myself
afterall.

Thanks for that suggestion, Terry. I copied all my files to a CD and made
the CD Read Only. All the files are RO. Never thought of being able to do
them all at once.

I do have another question in this regard. I noticed that none of the read
only files copied from the CD also have the Archive box unchecked. What does
Archive mean in the sense that all new documents created on the HD has this
box checked? I expect that I should recheck all the files to the Archive
attribute, but what would happen if I didnt?

Hi Tonya,

The Archive attribute is for Backup utilities such as Windows Backup.
Files that need to be backed up will have the Archive attribute
checked. For files that have been backed up and have not been modified
the Archive attribute will be cleared.

If you modify one of the documents you'll find the Archive attribute
will be checked. :)
