When opening an existing Excel file previously not saved
as read only, I can only opens it as a read only file.
Why?

Hi NC,

Probably you save the file with preferencial options:

File/Save as/Tools/General Options

Here you can put a password to permit that a file can be open to b
modified or as read only.

Only delete the passwords and save again the file, then you can open i
normally.

I have updated to MS Office PE 2003 and I have not found any passwords in the general options. My attributes are not set for read only but when I try to back up or save to CD-R drive the Office files become read-only?

That is the default behaviour when saving/copying to CD.

All depends upon how the files get "burned" to the CD.

With regular Windows burning, they will always be read-only.

If you were to use a packet writing application like Nero InCD, files would
not be read only and individual files could be erased or written to on the CD
just like a big floppy disk.
