I have files opening as read only, the box is not clicked in properties of
the file OR in tools, options, security and yet still read only. Any ideas?

Your antivirus is interfering perhaps? The file resides in a folder that
you only have read access to? You don't have an activated version of Excel?

Are you opening directly from CD or HDD?

If from CD they will be read-only.
