Read Receipts going to wrong account

We're running Outlook 2002 SP3 on the desktop. This connects to an
Exchange 5.5 server and also to an SMTP/POP3 server, and users have
accounts on both.

When a message comes in via the POP3 server and a Read Receipt is
requested, Outlook is sending the receipt via the Exchange account
instead of the SMTP/POP3 one that the original message came in on. The
Exchange server is not configured for SMTP and so the receipt just gets
dropped on the floor.

All the Outlook settings appear correct, and meddling with the Exchange
server is not an option. Any other ideas?
