Read vs unread

Am I missing something? I'm brand new to Macs and Entourage so I might be
missing something but I can't find a solution. Not wanting to continually
see all sorts of message I no longer need to read, I tried using "view" and
clicking "unread only" but I just got the audible sound of messages being
received and several of my newsgroups' font's went to bold and indicated
unread messages (at least that's what I thought as there were numbers after
the name of the group in brackets as in (3). When clicking on the group,
there was no message shown and, thinking I'd missed something, I went back
to "view" and unchecked "unread only" and found there were no new messages
making me wonder if I'm missing something or if this is just some sort of
glitch in Entourage?

Thanks,
Tim

What news server are you using? I do know that some news servers such as
msnews.microsoft.com often report ghost message counts. I see this too
using Thunderbird instead of Entourage. Unfortunately, this is a problem
with the news server.

Finally looked again and noticed the "more" icon next to the trash and
clicking it gets the phantom messages which I can then mark as read the the
problem seems to resolve itself. The messages are always really old so I'm
assuming it's just some sort of failure to properly initialize the initial
download of messages. At any rate, it seems to have stopped so, I would
assume, I've gotten all of them from the server. If it happens again, I'll
try to keep track of exactly what I was doing at the time etc.

Thanks for the help

Don't bother. It will happen again. The Entourage newsreader and the
Microsoft news servers are always showing the wrong count. Just trust that
Entourage will show you the unread messages and forget looking at the
number.

This will never get fixed. The Entourage newsreader is a poor orphan child
and has never been upgraded since it was introduced. It is however, an easy
way to get help on the Microsoft newsgroups.

Anyone following along... the Mactopia forum is not a forum. It's an
interface to the Entourage newsgroup.

This link explains how to subscribe using the Entourage newsreader:

My experience has been the same.

Note that you don't have to download the old messages to mark them as read.
Just press cmd-opt-t or select Mark All as Read from the Message menu.
