read/write error (-40)

when I try to open Entourage, I get the following message:

Entourage cannot access y our data. To attempt to fix the problem, rebuild your data base.

Two methods of rebuilding the database are offered and neither work. The program crashes.

I am using Entourage 10.0.0 and running OX10.4 on a G4 Power PC. I've never had a problem with Entourage, or anything else, on this computer.

Running Disk First Aid on the disk does not solve the problem and neither does trashing the prefs.

This problem just started suddenly recently when I clicked on an email in my inbox while the program was downloading email. Entourage has not worked since, and Word, Excel, and Powerpoint all produce an error message when I try to start them--however they function normally. Entourage only crashes. The error message with Word, Excel and Powerpoint is: An unexpected error occurred while trying to load the Microsoft Framework X Library.

I have tried downloading Office 11.2 from Mactopia, but receive an error message saying I don't have the proper software installed to allow an upgrade--even though no software is specified in the system requirements other than OS 10.2 and newer.

I would prefer to download a new version of Office if that would eliminate the problem.

I would be grateful for any solutions.

OK, which it it... Entourage X or Entourage 2004? Download this script
application and it will tell you what version you have.

Did it complete? How much free space on your drive?

Can you open Entourage? If yes, then make a copy right NOW! If Entourage
fails and refuses to open the copy will be your only way to salvage your
data.

Did you install the Safari 4 beta? This has caused all sorts of problems for

An unexpected error occurred while
trying to load the Microsoft Framework X Library.

A framework error normally means one or more components of Office have not
been updated correctly and are now out of synch with other bits.

I have tried downloading Office 11.2 from Mactopia, but receive an error

If you have Entourage X, then you will have to pay to upgrade to Entourage
2004. If you truly have 10.0.0 you never bothered to upgrade to 10.1.9 that

I've done several recoveries of Entourage X databases for clients. Even
after rebuild you might be able to open, but the long term stability is
suspicious. I advise you to move your data out of that Identity and create a
new Identity then import the data.

I missed commenting on the subject error that you didn't include in the
message body.

Error -40 is a positioning error (tried to position before start of file).
This might indicate file system corruption. Try running Apple's Disk
Utility: First Aid and repairing the disk till it shows clean.

Error numbers in this range can indicate bad disk problems. Be sure you have
backups of all your important data. Your drive could be on the way out.

Sorry, but it sounds like you not only have software issues, but possibly
hard drive issues as well.

I HAVE RUN DISK FIRST AID USING THE ORIGINAL DVD BECAUSE ENTOURAGE IS ON MY STARTUP DISK. THE DISK HAS SHOWED UP CLEAN.

Office 10.0.0 is the original version of Office X (not Office 2004). MS no
longer supports any version of Office X.

You may be able to update to the latest version of Office X, however, by
using the Check for Updates menu, which I believe was on the Help menu of
any Office X application (as it is in Office 2004).

To save an Identity, duplicate the Office X Identities folder inside
~/Documents/Microsoft User Data/
(where ~ represents your home user folder).

I appreciate you trying to make your answers stand out with caps, but it's
hard to read. A more friendly way to access this newsgroup and more
email-like is to use the Entourage newsreader.

How to.....If you use a newsreader rather than the Mactopia interface to
this newsgroup you can download old messages and search for answers. If you
are not familiar with a newsreader, Entourage's basic newsreader already has
the Microsoft News server included. All you do is subscribe to the
newsgroups you want. See this article for help subscribing using the
Entourage newsreader:

2.18 GB FREE ON THE DRIVE.

That's hardly enough to run anything without crashing. You need a minimum of
10% free space on your hd for virtual memory.

If you read the article on "Rebuilding a damaged database that exceeded size
limit" you would see you need up to 500 GB free.

Even if you had free space, until you updated Entourage X to 10.1.9 most
likely the rebuild would fail.

Microsoft Office v. X for Mac 10.1.9 Update

Upgrade...move from Office X to Office 2004 or Office 2008; move from Office
2004 to Office 2008. You cannot upgrade any version of Office for Mac to a
newer version through a downloadable software update. You must purchase a
retail copy of Office in order to upgrade.

Update...go from 12.0.0 to 12.1.0. You can update for free any version of
Office. An update includes improvements for that version.

OK, you now have a lot of info, but let's put this into context...

* Until you free up some space on your computer nothing is going to help
your situation.

* Until you upgrade to 10.1.9 you would not be able to rebuild your
Entourage X database.

Options:

* Free up space, upgrade to 10.1.9 and get some help rebuilding your
Identity.

* Free up space, buy Office 2008 and you will still have to get your
Entourage X Identity working in order for Office 2008 to import it.

Yours is not a simple problem to fix since it involves more than an
Entourage problem. Your local Mac User group might be able to provide you
with names that could help you. I work with users so if you can't do this on
your own or find a local consultant, contact me off list.
