Reading data from external files

I use macros to extract file information from an .ini file and populate
fields in a Word document using the system.privateprofilestring("data.ini",
"document","data") format.
This works fine in Word (up to 2003).
I do not seem able to do the same thing in PowerPoint oe Excel as the
"system.privateprofilesting" does not seem to be recognised.
Is there any way round this?
ANY help would be gratefully appreciated.

Bill,

The focus of this newsgroup is Macros in Access, the database program.

I think you would have a better chance of getting good help with your
question in a PowerPoint and/or Excel newsgroup.

I have now posted this in the PowerPoint forum.
I am sure there used to be a very specific forum for Macros generally in
Office, but I cant seem to find it.
