I am entering in names for a running race and was wondering if it is possible
for Excel to automatically capture the actual time as well for the entrants.

Excel would have no way of knowing when a runner came passing by the
computer it was on without special equipment made specifically for that
purpose. I believe timing chip systems have their own software that
generates output as printouts and HTML and text files. The latter two could
be imported into Excel for analysis.

Hi Alison

if you were thinking of excel putting the time in when you put the name in
then check out
http://www.mcgimpsey.com/excel/timestamp.html
you might find some ideas there to assist ...
if you where hoping for excel to recognise the runners as they come past and
update their times, i think you might have to wait for the next version or
two :)

Cheers

Presumably you are typing the name? You can press CTRL+SHIFT+; to enter the
time into a cell.
