RECALCULATION won't stay set to automatic

For some reason the recalculation setting
TOOLS
OPTIONS
CALCULATION
AUTOMATIC
will not stay set to automatic. This started about a week ago. Our system is
updated at night by the IT people and they have no idea why this has happened.

Is there a way to set a UNIVERSAL setting for recalculation?
