Receiving Yahoo POP mail problems

Version: 2008 Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard) Processor: Intel Email Client: pop Over the past three or four weeks I have been experiencing problems receiving my POP email from Yahoo on Entourage 2008. I have been a long-time subscriber to Yahoo and user of Entourage. About half of the time I receive errors saying that "Entourage cannot find the server. Verify the server information is entered correctly in the Account Settings, and that your DNS settings in the Network pane of System Preferences are correct. Error -3170" or "Communication to server failed or was dropped. Error -3253." I did not make any changes to my computer or accounts during this time. I initially thought it was my ISP, but the problem occurs on different ISPs. I have a secondary POP email account (through school) that works just fine. I contacted Yahoo, and went through multiple troubleshooting steps (including temporarily disabling security settings, reseting my account settings, etc) all to no avail. My account settings are correct, and I have followed all the steps outlined on the Entourage help page (http://www.entourage.mvps.org/accounts/index.html). There hasn't been an issue with sending, only receiving. Any thoughts?

Error -3253

"Communication to server failed or was dropped. Mail could not be sent.
Error -3253"

One user reported: The sent mail folder was too large. Moved 18 months of
e-mails and their attachments to a new folder and it worked like a champ.

Have you checked to see if your quota is full on Yahoo? If you have checked
"leave on server" and never delete it¹s possible your mail box is full.

It¹s possible that Yahoo made some change on their server and now require
different settings for receiving. I would see if they have posted anything
and contact Yahoo technical support.

Thanks for responding. I wish it had been that simple. I had cleared all my saved mail from the Yahoo server (my settings are to delete mail from the server) and the problem is with receiving mail, not with sending.

As for Yahoo technical support, I have had extensive communication with them and they claim no changes to their servers and are convinced it is on my end or my ISP. However, the problem is not the ISP, because I have experienced it on three different ISPs. Other ideas?

Good suggestions. I set up a new identity in Entourage and it has been successfully receiving my Yahoo email for over twelve hours without errors. Apple mail seems to work too. Using my browser also works. Does this mean my identity or database may be corrupted? Can (or should) I transfer the contents of my main identity to the new one?

Yes, it does sound like corruption. For help moving your old data out see:

How to manually move your data. (when import fails and/or you need to move
to a new Identity same version or revert to an older version)

Thanks Diane for your help. I set up the new identity and things seem to be working now.
