Recently unable to open office docs via a unc path

Since the weekend I am unable to open office documents via unc path.
Previously I had setup a Default file location \\xxxxxx\xxxx and it worked
perfectly.
Suddenly since the weekend it has stopped working

Also opening any files from the server has become very slow

Any clues will be helpful

You might want to ask the powers that be if your workstation was patched
with April's security updates. If they did, you might want to take a peek
at http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;918165&sd=RMVP
since one of them is causing issues under very specific conditions.
