Recipients field includes the word "E-mail" -- why?

How do I avoid having the word "E-mail" show up in my
addresses? For example, I have entered a Contact in my
address book whose name is John Doe. Whenever I send an
email to him, "John Doe (E-mail)" shows in the To field.
How can I avoid this?
